This summer, Addison County is the land of milk and maple syrup and coffee. Three local businesses – Monument Farms, Hillsboro Sugarworks, and Vermont Coffee Company – are "Shakin' for Shelter" to support Addison County's homeless families and individuals at the John Graham Shelter in Vergennes.

At Middlebury's Festival on the Green, July 10-16 and at various events throughout the summer, volunteers will serve up amazing iced coffee shakes from Vermont Coffee Company, with Monument Farms dairy and Hillsboro Sugarworks maple syrup.  All proceeds will benefit the John Graham Shelter in Vergennes, which, for the past 30 years, has served those who have lost their housing, jobs, or both.

“There’s nothing like it anywhere in the world,” said Paul Ralston, Roastmaster at the Middlebury roastery.  “We slow-roast fair trade coffee, add local cream, and finish it with a splash of sweet maple syrup.  Shaken and serve iced, it’s a unique Vermont treat and a delicious way to support neighbors in our community.”

The fundraiser has proven popular with residents and visitors.  Last season, several thousand dollars was raised for the shelters in Addison and Chittenden county.  The John Graham Shelter is grateful for the help.  Shelter Director Elizabeth Ready said that the Shelter has seen an increase in the number of people needing food, shelter and services.

"These businesses are raising both money and awareness," Ready said. "The Shakin' for Shelter events have been a major help to us financially and we appreciate the initiative these business leaders are making to help their neighbors.”  As an added benefit, she said, "Our residents love the coffee and appreciate the support.  When you are down, it means a lot to know that people in the community are behind you, rooting for you to succeed."
